Why do I need to hire an attorney to get a divorce?
The same reason why a patient can’t operate on themselves. You can’t.
It’s foolish and it’s ultimately going to cost you more when you lose a house, an asset, or your right to support and future of financial security.
A retainer to an attorney is far less (in some cases below 1% of the martial assets).
So what is smarter?
Paying an attorney less than 1% to protect your share of your martial assets? Or giving it to the ex’. ‘ and the new spouse?

I guess your right. Even though CA allows on to do your own. Best to have it done right. Friend of mine did her own and the husband hired an attorney and he took the children and the house. Now she is doing catch-up. Gave her your phone number.
